The Video Platform Provides The Community Authority to Limit AI-Generated Media in Timelines

Users will soon have a new feature that enables them to lessen the amount of AI-created videos appearing in their feeds. This move comes as the platform revealed that it currently hosts over 1 bn AI videos.

Testing and Rollout

The new functionality is in a pilot phase over the following weeks before a full-scale launch. This advancement coincides with a rise in AI content, spurred by new AI video creators.

The Broader AI Trend

It has been noted that nearly 10% of the fastest-growing content creators on a popular video site exclusively feature clips produced artificially. A considerable share of this content is classified as low-quality AI content, a term for poor-quality, bulk-generated content that is typically illogical or surreal.

“We know from our community that numerous viewers enjoy content made with AI tools, including AI artwork to informative clips, and we want to provide users the power to adjust the amount of that, based on their own choices,” said a company executive.

AI on the Platform

The service disclosed that there are currently 1.3bn videos on its network labeled as made with AI. Overall, over 100 m videos are added to the service every day, making AI-generated material a minor percentage of its complete catalog.

Customizing Your Feed

Viewers will be in a position to limit or boost the level of artificial media they watch by opening the content preference feature in the app and picking AI-made media. Additional categories that can already be modified under the tool encompass current affairs, fashion, aesthetics, and choreography.

Content Labeling and Policies

The platform’s guidelines oblige creators to identify convincing artificially created content, and it bans harmful AI impersonations of public figures or emergencies. Any believable AI-generated clip that is not labeled can be removed under its terms of service.

Additionally, the service will henceforth attach an AI-generated tag to content created with its own AI tools, or detected by an cross-platform project for identifying artificial media. This measure is aimed to help prevent users from trying to circumvent the disclosure requirement.

Educational Initiatives

TikTok is also launching a two million dollar AI literacy fund for experts and institutions to create learning resources about using AI responsibly. This initiative will benefit non-profit groups dedicated to training computer science.

Content Safety Approach

The video-sharing app has justified its content review process, amid controversy over proposals to lay off a large number of safety staff in the United Kingdom. The company is planning to eliminate a significant number of roles in its content moderation division in London, with trade unions and digital protection specialists expressing worry that people are being substituted by automated systems.

A trust and safety lead explained that human moderation would still have a role, but artificial intelligence can shield workers by eliminating the most harmful content before it gets reviewed by people. TikTok reported a notable drop in disturbing and violent content handled by human moderators over the last 12 months due to the use of its machine learning processes.

“We think that it’s essential to combine staff and AI to maintain a secure environment,” the official commented. “We’ll have people as part of that process, but we also think it’s extremely critical to minimize viewing of harmful content as quickly as possible, which is the area in which a lot of the machine support is making a difference work at speed.”
