A recent study reveals that individuals who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People buying such medications should be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to original mass within about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Doctors propose the mode of action of the injections explains the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
A Lifelong Disease?
The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
People who have discontinued the medication explain a intense return of cravings.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," said an individual.
The struggle is compounded if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among women than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success relies on integrated behavioural support.
